Bean Planting
After listening to "The Tiny Seed," our students engaged in a discussion about what you need to grow a plant. Some suggestions were soil, water, sun and light. We then talked about whether or not light and sun are the same thing. The students had a lot of great ideas. Jake wants his to go on the chalkboard because there is a light very close to it. Ruby would like to put hers next to the window because it's sunny. We gathered the necessary materials and began planting our bean plants. We then put our seeds around the school. We are going to check on the beans every few days. We'll keep you updated!

Let's start adding
Today the class worked on an addition math problem in partners. We have started teaching addition by showing different ways to make a number. For example, 4 and 1 make 5, 3 and 2 make 5, also 5 and 0 make 5.

Patterns Everywhere
Today we looked for patterns in our classroom, on our clothes and in our school. Patterning is an important math skill. For beginners, patterns using two objects are easily identified. Once the students can identify, create and extend simple AB patterns we encourage them to explore more complex patterns. Here are some pictures of patterns we found while we went for a 'pattern walk.'

Silly rhymes
We have been working on rhyming. It is a tough skill to learn and is best taught through repetition. Mrs. Kidd wrote a funny poem today, and the students filled in the words. "Fred" is our funny monster we created. We have also spent some time singing down by the bay. The students enjoy creating silly rhymes. Ask your child to rhyme things around the house, or things that you see while driving in the car.
